The tour around the Golden Ring will give you an idea of the way of life the small Russian towns live now. The cities of the Golden Ring:

Vladimir — the ancient capital of Russia that witnessed major victory parades in Russian history since Alexander Nevskiy times until the nineteenth century. The city occupies a picturesque site on the banks of the Kliazma river, 166 kilometers East of Moscow. Founded in 1108 by the powerful Duke Vladimir Monomakh, the city owes its unique character Andrei Bogolyubsky, grandson of Vladimir, who made it the capital of all Kievan Rus in 1169. The new capital was created by a lot of gifted masters, whose names unfortunately are unknown now. Vladimir is the city where all three types of art are so popular: architecture, painting and sculpture, are represented by famous masterpieces. Marvelously decorated, the Cathedral of the Dormition is the tallest church in Russia. It was the place of coronation of the Grand Dukes. This is where the famous icon of the Virgin of Vladimir, patron of Russia, was kept, now it is in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. It contains frescoes by two Russian geniuses of icon painting - Andrei Rublev and Daniel Chiorni and a beautiful baroque iconostasis.

Sergiev Possad, ex. Zagorsk — This small town, located 70 km from Moscow, which was called Zagorsk for several decades, is famous worldwide for the beauty of its monastery. More than a million people visit Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius each year, as well as the churches and cathedrals on its territory, the place is considered to be the heart of the Russian Orthodox faith.

Rostov Veliky — the city, called “Symphony in Stone”, is a beautiful medieval town with countless domes, reflected in the waters of Lake Nero. This is one of the oldest cities of Russia, which reached its economical and cultural peak between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries, exactly before the Tatar’s yoke.

Suzdal — Founded in 1024, Suzdal is considered to be a masterpiece of Russian medieval architecture, wonderful place of 200 religious and civil monuments. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Pereslavl-Zalessky — architectural monuments are the wealth of Pereslavl-Zalessky. The oldest is the Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Saviour (XII century.) Which, according to a legend, was built on the place where Alexander Nevsky, the great Russian prince, was born. The churches of Alexander Nevsky and the Purification of St. Vladimir are remarkable for their cubic shape and high roofs.

Kostroma — this small provincial town of the Golden Ring, located 350 km from Moscow, is known for its downtown buildings, which are dating back to the 18th-19th centuries — rows of stalls Gostinny Dvor (Merchant’s Yard), the Fire Tower, and Dvorianskoye Sobranie (assembly of aristocracy). However, the real treasure of Kostroma is the Monastery of the Holy Ipatius. This magnificent building is located outside of the city and was the place where the first Tsar of the Romanov dynasty, Mikhail Fedorovich, lived.

Yaroslavl — located at the confluence of the Volga and Kotorosl, Yaroslavl was founded in 1010 on an ancient settlement of the Vikings. In the seventeenth century it was the second largest city in terms of importance in Russia and became temporarily the capital of the country during the occupation of Moscow by the Polish armies.
